В связи с 160-летием со дня рождения выдающегося бурятского этнографа и фольклориста, просветителя Матвея Николаевича Хангалова в статье актуализируется часть его творческого наследия, хранящаяся в Центре восточных рукописей и ксилографов ИМБТ СО РАН, в частности, личная переписка со знаменитыми российскими и бурятскими учеными и общественными деятелями: М. Н. Богдановым, Ц. Ж. Жамцарано, Д. А. Клеменцем, М. М. Сахъяновой и т. д. Приводятся наиболее интересные и характерные цитаты, которые детально раскрывают не только дружеские и научные связи М. Н. Хангалова, но и малоизвестные факты из жизни и деятельности его ближайших друзей и коллег – представителей передовой российской и бурятской интеллигенции. Акцентируется значение этой переписки в качестве источника по развитию бурятского социума в начале ХХ столетия. В целях сохранения этого уникального письменного наследия обосновываются его дальнейшая систематизация и дигитализация.

THE EPISTOLARY HERITAGE OF M. N. KHANGALOV

The article is dedicated to 160th anniversary of the outstanding Buryat ethnographer and folklorist, enlightener Matthew Nikolaevich Khangalov. It is a part of his creative heritage, stored in the COMX of the IMBT SB RAS that is being analyzed. Namely, his personal correspondence with the famous Russian and Buryat scientists and public figures: M. N. Bogdanov, Ts. Zh. Zhamtsarano, M. M. Sakhyanova. The author cites the most characteristic and interesting quotes from letters. They reveal in details not only the friendly and scholarly ties of M. N. Khangalov himself, but also little-known facts from the life and work of his closest friends and colleagues from representatives of the advanced Buryat intelligentsia.
For example, they соntain such information as: publishing collections of Buryat folklore for general public, discussion about the development of Buryat script, activities in the field of organizing schools, teaching native language, the benefits of an informal approach to translating Orthodox and educational literature for Buryats.
Thus, the significance of this correspondence as a source on the history of the intelligentsia and the history of the study of shamanism in Buryatia at the beginning of the 20th century is emphasized. Systematization and digitalization of this unique written heritage is planned in order to preserve and further study of it.
